Public asked to donate for rapists' appeal

Just two weeks after two Christchurch men were handed rape convictions, the public is being asked to help appeal the convictions.

Brooke Rolleston and Brandon Roche were found guilty of raping a 15-year-old girl at a party early last year.

A new website with a bank account number is calling for donations to aid an appeal.

The page relates that the families of the 20-year-olds believe the pair are innocent.

Brooke Rolleston is described as a role model, with dreams of travelling to Israel to be baptised in the Jordan River.

Brandon Roche is described as having aspirations to start his own company.

The website has since been restricted and can't be accessed without a password.

Massey Law Professor Chris Gallivan says that while the friends and family who set it up did not name the victim, they risk re-victimising her. He adds that there are some worrying messages the offender's supporters are putting out there.

"There was one line in there saying 'For anybody who's had sex with a woman who's drunk, that you could be in trouble'," Gallivan relates. "My immediate reaction was 'Of course!'"

Gallivan says people need to have full consent when they're having sex, and if the person who you're having sex with is heavily intoxicated then you should be worried.
