Auckland Police are working to identify the culprits behind a massive brawl at a Mangere KFC.

As many as 80 teenagers took part in the fight - some brandishing wooden clubs, chairs, and even a knife.

Two 17 year olds are charged with disorderly behaviour, possessing offensive weapons and resisting arrest, while three 15 year olds have been referred to Youth Aid.

Counties Manukau West Area Commander Inspector Jason Hewett said police have some video footage of the brawl.

"We are collecting it. It's coming in slowly, so that's why we're really appealing to anyone else who was there - don't post it on facebook, bring it to us so we can get to the bottom of who was involved."

The possibility of gang connections sparking Monday's brawl is being investigated by police.

Gang expert and researcher Dr Jarrod Gilbert said if gang affiliations are involved, it's most likely to be Los Angeles style street gangs, rather than traditional patch wearing gangs.

"They're cliques formed most often from lower socio-economic areas, they bond together. These gangs don't tend to survive long over time, they can spring up and fade away but when they spring up they can cause problems."

"They're a different form of gang, not associated with the back-patch wearing gangs, but they're mimicking that MTV culture, of LA style gangster rap and the like."
