Police are asking people with video recordings of an attack on a Lower Hutt taxi driver to bring them in for detectives to look at.

The cabbie was punched several times at around 8.45 on Christmas Eve in Alicetown, by a man who also damaged his car.

Detective Sergeant Lee Underhill said he could have been seriously injured if a passerby hadn't intervened.

"He undoubtedly saved the victim from serious head injuries."

Underhill said the driver is recovering but is shaken and still hasn't been able to go back to work.

"No one should be subjected to a nasty and unwarranted attack while simply working to support themselves and their family."

He said police are following strong lines of inquiry but need help.

He wants to make contact with people who recorded the incident.

"There were people present on the night who recorded the incident, I’m interested in any footage that people have depicting the assault or the offender."

If you were there, or have any information that could help us identify the offender, please call Hutt Valley Police on 04 560 2600, quoting reference 171225/1103.

Information can also be provided anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
