UPDATE 11.04AM: A man is assisting police following the death of a man who was dropped off at Tauranga Hospital with critical injuries.

Police believe they know where a man had been before he sustained fatal injuries - but not how he got them.

But Detective Inspector Lewis Warner says a man in the suburb of Otumoetai is helping police with their investigation.

He says there is no risk to the public.

The critically injured man was dropped off at Tauranga Hospital just after midday yesterday, but later died.

Police believe he had been at a home in Wilrose Place - a street where officers searched a property later in the day, in relation to an ongoing inquiry.

It's now believed those two incidents are related.

Tauranga Police want to hear from any potential witnesses who were in the Wilrose Place area, or who know how the man sustained his injuries.
