Police are investigating the death of a man who suffered serious head injuries at a Tauranga address overnight.

Tauranga Detective Inspector Lew Warner said police and St John Ambulance responded to calls for help at Wilrose Pl about 10.40pm on Sunday.

Warner said a 52-year-old man who had suffered a serious head injury was pronounced dead at 11.15pm.

Police are conducting a scene examination and enquiries into the man's death will continue today.

"We are currently contacting the victim's family," Warner said.

A reporter at the scene said an armed officer was standing in front of a police patrol, blocking the entrance to the Greeton Secondhand and Pawn Warehouse.

She said staff of a car wreckers behind the warehouse were gathered outside the scene as they were unable to enter their workplace.

Police would like to speak to anyone who was in the Courtney Rd, Wilrose Pl, Fraser St area between 9 pm and midnight last night.

The public can contact the Tauranga Police station or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
