Police in Whanganui have hit a dead end on the search for 14 hundred lambs, in what might be the largest stock heist in the country.

Police received a complaint about the theft from a property near Fordell.

The flock's worth around 120 thousand dollars and is believed to have gone missing from the property near Fordell between October the 25th and November the 7th.

Whanganui's Federated Farmers President Harry Matthews said it's gutting for the farmer.

"Fourteen hundred lambs might leave a bit of a hole in the ol' budget for this year, it's a fair sum when you add it all up."

Matthews said it would have to be a well organised theft.

He said the whereabouts of the two truckloads of lambs remains a mystery, despite Police investigations.
