Wellington's top cop insists the police officer who fatally shot a machete-wielding man followed protocol.
A 44-year-old man was shot in the shoulder in Mana as he approached a patrol car with a machete at 12.30am yesterday morning.
He died in an ambulance on the way to Wellington Hospital.
Police were searching for the man following an earlier domestic incident in Waikanae.
Wellington Acting District Commander Superintendent Steve Kehoe maintained that the staff involved acted professionally and appropriately and in accordance with policy - using a firearm as a last resort.
Kehoe said the officers have his backing and support.
