Mother slams trans-Tasman parole agreement

The mother of a schoolgirl murdered by a man who had already killed before has slammed a new trans-Tasman agreement.

John Key and Tony Abbott this weekend agreed Australia will give New Zealand more notice when convicted Kiwi criminals are being deported here at the end of their sentence.

Tina Bayliss' daughter Jade was murdered in her home in 2011 by convicted killer Jeremy McLaughlin.

She says the new deal means nothing.

"What use is that to us?" she asks.

"We're getting a little bit more notice when a deported criminal is getting dropped off at the airport? Is that it? I mean, what parole conditions have they got? What's going to happen to them, who's going to look after them?"

She says employers will be the only ones benefiting from a move to expand criminal history checks.

"To use my daughter's picture and Jeremy McLuaghlin in the newscast makes it look like I'm getting somewhere in my campaign but it's got nothing to do with me."

Bayliss says it's a step in the right direction, but is not what she is lobbying for.

She wants a serious crimes register, parole conditions for criminals released to New Zealand, and access to rehabilitation for the offenders.

"As soon as they step off that plane, we need parole conditions, we need to know where they're going to be living, we need to know what they're doing, what community they're going to be living in."

Today Jade Bayliss would have celebrated her 17th birthday.
