UPDATED 11.13am: A Napier man will spend Christmas and his birthday in prison after allegedly injuring a police officer during a hit and run at a check point in Hawke's Bay.

Robbie Richards has appeared in the Napier District Court this morning charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

The 28 year old's been remanded in custody until next month.

Police allege he hit Constable Adam Blummont with his car at a drink driving check point in Clive last Thursday night.

Constable Blummont suffered leg injuries and cuts and grazes to his face and arm.
