A 61-year-old man has been charged following a hit and run in Whanganui.

A man, initially in a critical condition, is now in a stable condition in intensive care in Wellington Hospital, after he was hit by a vehicle early yesterday morning.

The driver now faces charges of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and driving while unlicensed and prohibited.

He is expected to appear in the Whanganui District Court tomorrow.

The hit and run occurred as a brawl involving a dozen people was taking place outside the Red Lion Inn on Anzac Parade at two in the morning.
