UPDATED 1.12PM A charge has been laid following a stabbing in Lower Hutt at a 21st birthday party that erupted into a brawl.

Emergency services were called to a house in Waddington Drive in Naenae early this morning.

They arrived to find up to 50 people fighting in the street.

An ambulance was pelted with bottles and a man in his 20s was taken to hospital in a critical condition with six stab wounds.

Another man, who's 20 years old, has been charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

He's due to appear in the Hutt Valley District Court today.
