A Christchurch man who repeatedly tortured a cat with a sharpened stick has been jailed for 14 months.
51-year old Raymond Cunningham has been convicted in the Christchurch District Court, after admitting to the charge of wilful ill-treatment.
He's also been ordered to pay over 600-dollars in legal fees and veterinary costs.
SPCA Canterbury CEO Barry Helem says when the cat was later found in a rubbish bin beside the house, it was injured and barely breathing.
Mr Helem says he hopes the custodial sentence will serve as strong warning to others.
