Police say an inmate released from Auckland Central Remand Prison to attend a family funeral has done a runner.

They believe 25-year-old Tuakana Matthews is with his 17-year-old girlfriend Shania Pirihi, who is also wanted by police.

Matthews was released from the Mt Eden prison for the funeral and was ordered to return to the facility by Tuesday evening last week.

He's described as Maori, about 170cm, of medium build, with Maori-design tattoos on his arms.

Pirihi is described as Maori, about 130 centimetres and of stocky build.

Police said Tuakana should not be approached and all sightings of him should be reported by calling 111.
