Christchurch's homeless horseman has walked away from court a free man.

Richard Hayden has today represented himself in a judge-alone trial in the Christchurch District Court after pleading not-guilty to a charge of endangering public safety when his horse ran in front of an oncoming car last year.

The horse had to be euthanised as a result of the incident.

Judge David Ruth says for Mr Hayden to have been proven guilty, the prosecution would've had to prove the 47-year-old had no control of the horse in the lead up to the incident.

He says the arguments put forward were unable to prove that.

Richard Hayden has been cleared of the charge.

Outside court, a shoeless Richard Hayden told the media he's not surprised by the ruling.

He says he knew he was innocent all along.

"I think I was free before I went in there. Innocent. was doing nothing wrong. You're allowed horses in town."

Richard Hayden says he now has two new horses, which he plans to bring into the CBD.
