Updated 3.42pm: An 18-year-old Hamilton woman who kidnapped an eight week old baby while its parents were home has been sentenced to four and a half months home detention.

Tequila Matekohi Samuels appeared in the Hamilton District Court today.

She kidnapped Konan Boyte from his Frankton home in October last year as he was sleeping.

Judge Smith says there was a level of premeditation because she'd told family members she was going to have a baby and had a capsule and baby clothes in her car.

Konan's mother, Kimberly Jamieson says the sentence is a joke, she wanted her sent to prison.

"It was honestly rubbish. It's pretty much saying go on, steal an 8 week old baby, and get a slap on the wrist for it."

Matekohi Samuels was a friend of the child's parents and returned to their house following the kidnapping and pretended to help them find their baby.
