A hitchhiker has got more than she bargained for in Gisborne.

The woman was picked up in Wairoa by a motorist headed North yesterday.

But during the trip she realised she was going the wrong way and actually wanted to be going South to Napier.

Gisborne police say her ride thoughtfully dropped her off at the local station.

They say they were thinking of shouting the woman a meal and a bed for the night.

But it turns out she was wanted for burglary and unlawfully taking a motor vehicle.

Police say the woman got her bed for the night, although the cells probably weren't as cosy as the accommodation she was expecting.

The woman was due to appear in court today.
