Four youngsters have been arrested after an elderly woman and her daughter were injured during a car-jacking in New Plymouth.

The incident led to a more than 40km pursuit, during which four police cars were damaged.

Police were called to the intersection of Rainsford St and St Aubyn St in New Plymouth around 8pm after it was reported two men, aged 17 and 18, and two women, aged 15 and 20, pulled the women from a car and stole it.

The car was pursued along State Highway 45 after the driver failed to stop near Oakura.

It was slowed by road spikes about 40km away near Pungarehu, before stopping in Rahotu.

The 72-year-old woman and her 48-year-old daughter who were pulled from the car were taken to hospital with abrasions and cuts.

They have since been discharged.

"We are continuing to provide support to the two victims, who were very shaken by what happened," said Detective Constable Anthony Temple.

The four offenders appeared in court this morning.

Investigations into the incident were ongoing and police have asked any witnesses with information to call New Plymouth Police on (06) 759 5500.
