An inmate has been taken to hospital in Dunedin following an incident yesterday morning.

The inmate is a prisoner from the Otago Corrections Facility, near Milton.

Police say they are investigating the incident which led to the man's injuries, while prison director Lyndal Miles also said the prison is investigating.

She says any prisoner who resorts to violence will be held to account.
