A District Court staff member has been accused of breaching a suppression order, over convicted murderer Phillip Smith's court case.
Smith's lawyer Tony Ellis understands that the Ministry of Justice employee sent a redacted summary of facts to four media organisations.
A judge has since lifted the suppression order, but Mr Ellis wants police to investigate.
"If their systems aren't robust enough to protect information the judge has suppressed, then there does need to be an investigation. I assume someone should do a criminal investigation into whether there should be a prosecution."
