The man who murdered Mangakino police officer Murray Stretch 16 years ago has been denied parole.
Carlos Namana bashed Constable Stretch to death as he tried to restrain him.
Namana pleaded guilty to murder and was jailed for a minimum 16 year non-parole period.
This is the first time he has been considered for release, however he's made it clear he wants to finish a violence programme for serious offenders first.
The Parole Board says a lot of work needs to happen before Namana no longer poses an undue risk to the safety of the community, and there is no question of parole at this stage.
The Board pointed out that Namana has been cited for drug use behind bars, but noted the last misconduct was in 2011.Â
They wrote in their ruling that he "clearly has considerable work to get on with to mitigate his assessed high risk of violent re-offending and moderate risk of general recidivism."
