Updated 4.13pm: A newly commissioned Maori carving just installed at Whangaparaoa College has been deliberately set alight.

Principal James Thomas says they're worried about why it happened and hopes the arson attack wasn't racially motivated.

"It worries me if they thought here are some Maori things to destroy. That would be terrible."

Rodney Police call it a wanton act of vandalism, and are investigating.

The official unveiling of the carvings was due to be done today, and on Monday night when the arson occurred they were still covered in black plastic.

Senior Constable Ian Price says police aren't ruling out a connection with several disorderly incidents police attended in the area on Monday night.

"It's just a terrible despicable piece of vandalism that is unnecessary."

Senior Constable Price says on the face of it, the carving could be repaired.

Police aren't ruling out a connection between several disorderly incidents in the area on Monday night involving a large group of youths.

Ian Price says anyone who knows anything should call police.
