Christchurch babysitter found guilty of manslaughter

The family of a one-year-old girl killed by her babysitter are still coming to terms with it.

A jury found Fijian-Indian Shayal Upashna Sami, 21, responsible for the death of Aaliyah Ashlyn Chand on January 6, 2015 at her Worcester St flat, but didn't intend to kill her.

The jury in the High Court at Christchurch came back with its verdict on Monday, after having begun deliberations on Friday.

Sami maintained the baby received the injuries when she fell off a couch.

Defence counsel Jonathan Eaton QC said that while it was rare for children to die from such accidents, he told the jury that all experts agreed that it can happen.

But the Crown said it was a reckless killing, with the injuries inflicted by Sami "in a moment of anger or frustration".

Crown prosecutors accused Sami of grabbing the child by the face, and slamming her against a hard surface in January 2015, and argued that the injuries -  two skull fractures, bleeding in the cranial cavity and eyes, as well as extensive bruising on her face, forehead and ears - didn't match the babysitter's story.

Outside court, Detective Senior Sergeant Scott Anderson spoke on behalf of the family.

He said absence has been painful for all those that knew her.

"The last two and a half years have been traumatic and draining for Aaliyah's parents and their wider family. They ask for privacy as they work through the emotion of the last two weeks, hearing about the last day's of Aaliyah's life and the subsequent guilty verdict.

"Although there is relief for them in the verdict, it is somewhat hollow as it won't bring Aaliyah back."

Justice Rachel Dunningham told Sami she'd be sentenced in a month's time.
