Politicians are being urged to put aside their differences to support better monitoring of dangerous offenders on parole.
The spotlight is currently on the case of Rebecca Papalii who's on parole here with a murder conviction from Perth in 1999.
Currently, there's no obligation on her to stay in touch with authorities.
Labour's justice spokesman Kelvin Davis says the situation highlights the need for a trans-Tasman parole agreement.
"Where people on parole but deported from Australia, or people on parole in New Zealand but deported back to Australia have some sort of monitoring conditions."
"The safety of the public is the first issue, and that should be paramount in our thinking."
