Updated 12.08pm: Bribery and corruption charges have been laid in a Serious Fraud Office investigation into Auckland local government workers.

Three people have appeared in the North Shore District Court this morning over undisclosed payments and gratuities worth more than a million dollars.

The investigation centred on former employers of Auckland Transport and the Rodney District Council, where, says the SFO, bribes were part and parcel of the working environment.

Stephen Borlase, Barrie George and one other person whose name has been suppressed have been bailed till next month.

The SFO alleges that Borlase, who was the head of engineering firm Projenz Ltd, paid gratuities in the form of cash, travel, accommodation and entertainment, to George and an associate.

Projenz had supply contracts with the Rodney council and then Auckland Transport in relation to maintenance and renewal of the roading network in the northern area.
