The Marlborough District Mayor is condemning a homophobic attack on a man wearing a pink T-shirt.
Kent Morgan was attacked by two men on Friday night while walking home from work in Blenheim because he was wearing a pink shirt.
Human Rights Commissioner Richard Tankersley said it's disappointing to hear after the country's worked so hard on normalising the involvement of the LGBT community.
Mayor John Leggett said it's not a common occurrence in his region and in reality it could happen anywhere.
He said they'll be doing all they can to assist police in finding the perpetrators.
"The way it was described from the paper report I've just read - it's clearly a cowardly attack I would describe it as."
Mr Leggett said it's not a common occurrence in his region.
"The reality is these sort of things can happen anywhere in the country, so I don't think we should single out the Marlborough District as a place where these sorts of events occur."
