An attack on a man in Invercargill in the early hours of the morning continued while he lay unconscious on the ground.
Police are seeking witnesses to the beating of the 21-year-old man by four men on the corner of Esk and Kelvin streets shortly after 2 this morning.
As the victim lay unconscious, he was repeatedly punched and stomped on the head.
Several members of the public stopped to help the injured man and police have praised them for doing so.
Police would like to speak with the occupants of an early model Ford Falcon or Fairmont that was seen leaving the area soon after the incident.
It was a light metallic colour and had mag or alloy wheels, tinted windows and a dark-coloured stripe running the length of the vehicle.
