UPDATED 10.09am: Police have arrested a Christchurch man this morning for allegedly stabbing a woman with a screwdriver.

The woman in her 40s was stabbed just after 1AM by the man in Hawke Street, New Brighton.

Police say the man in his 60s was known to the victim.

Her condition has deteriorated in hospital and she's been taken into surgery.

"The woman has undergone surgery at Christchurch Hospital and is in a critical but stable condition,'' police said.

Police officers and forensic staff are still at the house, where they will carry out a scene examination today.

Authorities are appealing for anyone who may have seen the offender or may have any useful information relating to the incident to come forward.

Police said they believed the man may have changed his clothes - and discarded them - before authorities arrived at the scene.

"Police are therefore asking New Brighton residents to check their properties for discarded adult's clothing.

"If you find anything, please do not touch or move it - but call police immediately.''
