UPDATED 4.06pm: A Wellington man accused of pulling women's teeth out with pliers during sex wanted them to be "gummy ladies", a jury has heard.

Philip Hansen is on trial in the Wellington District Court, facing 11 charges relating to offending against four different women between 1988 and 2011.

The charges include wounding with intent to injure, male assaults female, rape and unlawful sexual connection.

Crown lawyer Sally Carter told the jury Hansen was fascinated with women's teeth.

“He made no bones about the fact that oral sex with him was better if she had no teeth”

Ms Carter says Hansen used pliers to remove six bottom teeth from one woman on a night when they had sex in his car in 1988.

“She struggled to try and get him to stop, but he removed the teeth and threw them out the window”

The woman, whose identity is suppressed, said she had to tell her parents she knocked them out in a drunken fall, and had flushed them down the toilet.

Ms Carter said Hansen then encouraged the woman to have all her teeth removed by a dentist, which she did.

“Once dentures were fitted he would intentionally break them so she would have no teeth, and she would go around as a gummy lady”

The jury has heard from the woman’s original police interview, which came after Hansen was arrested in 2012.

She said her wisdom teeth started coming through after the rest of her teeth had been removed, and Hansen had tried to take them out with a screwdriver.

She said he was controlling, made her wear skirts with no underwear, and shave her hair off.

He became sexually demanding, and trying to fatten her up, she said.

Hansen is also accused of extracting the teeth of another woman, reaching into the mouth of a third and “wiggling” her teeth with his hands, and cutting the toes of a fourth woman.

The trial is set to run until the end of next week.
