UPDATED 12.45pm: The names of the victims of last month's axe attack in Upper Hutt can now be made public.

Retimana Nicholls has appeared in the High Court in Wellington this morning, charged with murder, wounding with intent and male assaults female.

It's alleged the 36-year-old went on a rampage with two axes in the suburb of Timberlea in December, killing Sandra Guerin.

Her son Thomas Guerin was also injured in the attack, as were Kane Love and Diane Misa.

Nick Walker was in court for the appearance and says it centred largely around whether he's mentally fit to enter a plea.

"And it was concluded that he is to be assessed by a psychiatrist, which will take around six weeks basically, to determine his fitness to enter a plea to the charges."

Meanwhile, the family of the man accused of last month's deadly axe attack in Upper Hutt has issued a statement today.

Rick Hepi spoke on behalf of his step-son, Retimana Nicholls, who has appeared in the High Court in Wellington this morning.

"We convey our deepest sympathies to the family for the loss of their loved one in December and we'd also like to express our condolences and aroha to all those affected by the incident."
