A 15-year-old driver fleeing police in a stolen vehicle with four passengers sped along Auckland's Southern Motorway before crashing into a truck.

The driver failed to stop for police in Otahuhu just before 11am, a police spokeswoman said.

The car sped towards the city on the Southern Motorway with police in pursuit until units were stood down.

The police Eagle helicopter flew overhead, tracking the car until it crashed into the back of a truck in Greenlane.

Several people then ran from the vehicle but were quickly located by police.

One person was taken to Auckland City Hospital with moderate injuries, a St John spokeswoman said.

The driver and four occupants were helping police with their inquiries, the spokeswoman said.

It was not clear whether anyone had been arrested. The Herald is seeking clarification.
