The Port Hills fires could happen again warns Fire and Emergency.
A wet winter and a hot dry start to summer has seen a large growth in grass, or potential fuel.
Regional Manager Richard McNamara says people need to be aware of their communities and fire safety.
"Port Hills wasn't a one-off. People need to be well aware of their fire risks, so that's things like keeping the grass down around your property.
"[People should] mow in the early morning or late evening, not during the heat of the day."
McNamara advises to make sure your gutters are clean and stick with gas BBQs not solid fuel.
