Cashmere High School has paid tribute to a student who died suddenly yesterday morning on his way to school.

17-year-old Thomas Fastier collapsed on Opawa Road around half past eight.

Police are investigating but suspect it was a medical event.

Principal Mark Wilson says the year 13 student was an absolutely fantastic young man.

He says the shock and sadness of his loss will be felt across the whole school community.

Wilson says their thoughts and prayers are with his family as they attempt to deal with this sudden awful loss.

Detective Senior Sergeant Greg Cottam has expressed his sympathy for Tom's family.

"I would also like to thank members of the public who stopped to assist Tom and those who contacted Police with information after the sad event."

The death has been referred to the coroner.
