A 31-year-old man who died after being hit by a car following a crash in Christchurch has been named as Jeremy Michael Gardiner.

Mr Gardiner died after being hit by a vehicle on Leeston Road, Springston, only moments after surviving a car crash into a roadside ditch around 11:30pm on Wednesday.

Mr Gardiner, from Christchurch, and another person survived the initial crash and were able to get out of the car, but he was then struck by a vehicle travelling along the same road.

Mr Gardiner died at the scene.

Police are investigating the circumstances of the crash.
