There are to be further job losses in Christchurch, as another local manufacturer shuts up shop and moves overseas.

Schneider Electric has confirmed it's closing its plant and shifting operations to Australia and Vietnam.

The closure of the factory, which makes light switches and power plugs, will affect around 50 jobs.

E tu industry coordinator Phil Knight says a number of workers have been with the firm since day dot.

"When you've worked for the same place 42 years and then to be told
'hey, within six to nine months you won't have a job here', sadness is one of those feelings that comes through."

Knight, says manufacturing jobs like these have provided secure, well-paid, permanent, full-time jobs.

"It's quite a big family so it's sad from that perspective. They are all incredibly dedicated to their jobs, they are very proud of what they do and they are very proud actually of who they work for."

The announcement comes just weeks after ABCorp announced it's closing its Christchurch plastic card factory, and relocating abroad.
