Hunger strike: Determined to battle on until something is done

A Christchurch man entering his second week of a hunger strike is accusing Southern Response of a lack of leadership as their dispute continues without resolution.

Peter Glasson hasn't eaten since last Monday and plans to continue his hunger strike until an out of court path to a settlement is found with his insurer.

Glasson claims he spent a lot of money on a five-page agreement he signed midway through last week, but Southern Response's lawyers continue to drag it out.

He says Southern Response now want to undertake a 17th inspection of his property, despite it already undergoing two full engineering assessments.

"They are now calling in a Wellington engineer who they want to do another full engineering assessment. We know full well exactly what he is going to say to that, that assessment is already pre-determined by Southern Response."

An independent facilitator was appointed by Christchurch MP and Minister Megan Woods but Glasson says Southern Response lawyers are dragging out the process and seem to be in no rush.

He says this is how it has always been with Southern Response, and says they continue to show a lack of leadership both at board and senior management level.

"At the moment, the tail is wagging the dog. The SR lawyers have just controlled the process with us, and I think there has been very little involvement from Southern Response staff."

Glasson says he's getting pretty tired, but he's determined to battle on until something is done.

"ANZAC Day is coming up and I take courage from all those people representing New Zealand who gave their lives, so it's nothing like what I'm doing."
