Waimakariri's mayor is hoping it'll be months, not years, before the public's ideas on the district's red zoned land will be put into practice.

Following extensive engagement with the community, the public's voted to create natural reserves and restore native ecosystems to the area.

David Ayers says BMX parks and walkways are just some of the possibilities that'll be explored, but there're some boxes that need to be ticked off first.

"We need to go back to the public with some suggestions how we can progress this," he says.

"There's some very broad questions around governance and financing which has still got to be sorted out with the government and with communities."

Markets, cafes, festivals and entertainment areas are also ideas that've been put forward.
