Freedom campers are moving on from a New Brighton carpark, much to the relief of local residents who have had enough.

Christchurch City Council has erected no camping signs and encouraged the campers to leave, which appears to be working.

It comes after a local newspaper photographer complained he was confronted with a knife - the latest in a series of complaints about the campers' behaviour.

Newstalk ZB Christchurch host Chris Lynch says he's been inundated with complaints, on air and on Facebook, about the situation.

"Yes they have defecated, yes they have been peeing on fences, that is all true.

"When I went there about two nights ago and took photos of them they were rude and disrespectful and they were drinking and drinking illegally on council property."

Chris Lynch says it's been going on for about four weeks and residents are beyond frustrated with how long it's taken the Council to act.
