There is excitement and relief in Sumner with the local seaside residents welcoming a long-awaited skate park decision.

Greater Christchurch Regeneration Minister Megan Woods has announced the permanent skate park and green space, in the red zone in the heart of Sumner.

The concrete skate park will be constructed at council-owned 26 Nayland St at a cost of $539,900 to ratepayers in the 2020-21 financial year.

Resident Kimberley Mossman says it's taken a long time, with the first resident who called for a skate park writing to the mayor about 35-years ago.

Local Liza Sparrow says having the skate park next door to the green space will bring life and vibrancy.

She says it'll be great having all ages of the community able to interact in one place.

“The older community will be able to interect with the younger ones which will be fantastic.”
