Council to explore living wage options

Christchurch City Councillors are set to explore how they could fund a living wage for staff, without worsening the council's financial position.

The Chief Executive and Employment Matters Committee will discuss the issue behind closed doors, because it could prejudice the council's commercial position.

Councillor Jamie Gough says nothing will be decided today but council wants to know its options.

"Councillors are very keen to explore equity around pay rates, about finding creative ways that we could perhaps close that gap between some of lower paid employees and those at the top."

Gough argues that if council wants to bridge the pay gap, they'll have to get creative.

"There isn't a whole lot of money going around so we need to be more prudent than ever around that. That certainly is one of the considerations."

Gough maintains no final decision will be made on the living wage today.
