The Christchurch City Council's taken a step forward with social housing by awarding the contract for 25 new units.
Local building company Miles Construction's won the contract.
The units will be built on vacant council land in Richmond, St Albans and Addington.
Councillor Andrew Turner says rebuilding social housing in Christchurch is crucial both now and in the future.
He says the new and improved designs will be ready in July.
