Christchurch residents opposed to council plans to reclassify a section of Denton Park will have their say today.

The Council wants to build a $35.7 million pool, library and service centre at the Hornby site but has to reclassify the park to do so.

The council received 1444 submissions on the matter - over 400 more than the reinstatement of the Christ Church Cathedral.

Save Denton Park Group chairman Mark Peters says an overwhelming 84 per cent of submitters are opposed to the plan.

"It's going to be pretty hard for them not to listen to such a strong voice coming back from the community that they value their park and they want to keep it as it is."

Peters says the sports that use the park will be seriously disadvantaged if the pool goes ahead.

"Take your hands off the park and stop the idea of reclassifying it because it's been used for its intended purpose and being used well by the clubs that are there."
