The Christchurch City Council has finished hearing submissions on its $10 million pledge towards the restoration of ChristChurch Cathedral.
More than half of the 1,000 plus submitters object to the use of ratepayers' money.
But Civic Trust deputy chair Ross Gray said restoring the cathedral will have wider implications for the city.
"It will help to accelerate the deeper recovery of the city, and certainly will help to facilitate the regeneration of the square which is most important."
The council hopes to make a decision on the pledge early next week.
