Beachgoers in Christchurch are being urged to carpool or consider public transport options.

The city's surf life savers say popular spots such as Sumner and Taylors Mistake have been "heaving" in the hot weather, and parking's the only thing holding people back.

The City Council's Transport Operations Manager Aaron Haymes says for decades beachgoers have been packing car parks on Christchurch's hottest days.

He says it's not worth finding more spaces for peak days.

"It only happens a few times a year, and there aren't many options for providing more capacity."

However, Christchurch beach goers appear to be better behaved than those on Auckland's west coast.

Bethells Beach Patrol Captain Adrian Jenkins has written to the Herald, saying one member of the public launched into him, calling him the fun police and telling him to f*** off.

Surf Life Saving New Zealand's Southern manager Stu Bryce says they're not seeing any negative behaviour from swimmers at Sumner beach and Taylor's Mistake.

"We don't go out there to tell people to move just for the hell of it, if they're asked to move along we are doing it for a reason.

"Most people are happy to abide by it, especially if there are young children out there or teenagers, most of the time they'll move, if not a parent will move them pretty quick."
