The economic impacts caused by wasps could be even greater than a study has revealed.
A study by Sapere Research shows the pests are costing the economy $130 million per year.
The impacts are felt greatest by the pastoral farming and bee keeping industries.
However, Department of Conservation scientist Eric Edwards, says the costs could be greater as some industries are almost impossible to measure.
"What is the impact on recreation and tourism in New Zealand. How much people hate wasps and behave differently as a result. That's an area where I'm pretty sure there's a big impact that hasn't been measured."
Edwards says a range of pest control options are now being considered.
"There will be no silver bullet I'm sure, but we should be looking at several things. We're developing bait station controls now or natural enemies to these wasps."
