Unlicensed builder fined for false claims

An unlicensed Christchurch builder who falsified records and carried out work he was not supposed to has received more than $13,000 in fines for his deception.

Andrew Maloney has been ordered to pay $10,000 in penalties and $3200 in reparations by the Christchurch District Court for work he did on a property in the city in July, 2016, the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment says.

He prepared foundations and placed and tied reinforcing steel on the property, even going as far as putting a fake builder's registration number on his "record of work" document, the ministry said.

A colleague checked the licensed building practitioner register and it was revealed Maloney was not licensed at all, even though he signed an employment agreement stating he was.

His false claim was a serious offence under the Building Act 2004, MBIE investigations team leader Simon Thomas said.

"If you want to do restricted building work, you must be a licensed building practitioner, or be supervised by one," Mr Thomas said.
