Uber makes plea for different regulations

Ride sharing service Uber is making a plea to our politicians not to treat it on the same basis as the taxi industry.

It's outlined its case in a submission to Parliament's Transport and Industrial Relations Select Committee, arguing that different transport models should be regulated in different ways.

Uber argues the P-endorsement process for drivers is a disproportionately massive fixed cost for private drivers providing ancillary rides, and will make ridesharing unviable.

It's also against its drivers being required to have Certificates of Fitness for their vehicles, given half of Uber drivers drive for less than 10 hours a week.

Uber said it's unreasonable to treat these vehicles as if they were full-time commercial cars with full-time drivers, and argues six month inspections are an onerous obligation unsupported by clear reasoning.
