An electronic payment system provider said Thanksgiving deals and sunny skies have led Kiwis on a shopping splurge ahead of Christmas.

Shoppers spent a total of $219 million yesterday using electronic payment terminals operated by Paymark.

This included a 32.8 per cent jump in spending with retail outlets compared to a week earlier and a 25.2 per cent jump on spending on the same Friday in 2016.

The jump in spending was due to Kiwi retailers increasingly holding sales to celebrate "Black Friday" - a traditional day for specials in the US during the Thanksgiving break.

The jump in total spending was highest in Marlborough, including in the town of Kaikoura.

Consumers in the region spent 27.4 per cent more yesterday compared with a year earlier.

Auckland and Northland consumers spent $88.6 million on Friday or 7.5 per cent more than a year earlier.
