Fair trade organics from other countries may be no more fair or sustainable than products produced here.
A new Victoria University study is investigating fair trade and organic products.
Researcher Professor Murray Warwick says they're comparing them with what New Zealand makes.
"We have organic production here and there's a big potential there for our wine, our fruit, and so on," he says.
"The project will look at fair trade and organic networks in southern Africa and also in South America and compare them and contrast them."
Warwick says our labour conditions may also be better than fair trade.
