Stockton mine workers face month of uncertainty

Workers at Stockton Mine still have a month of uncertainty as they vie for remaining jobs.

Solid Energy will ditch 113 jobs at the mine, along with six at its Spring Creek operation.

It will now go through a selection process for the remaining jobs, which it expects to finalise at the end of next month.

EPMU organiser Garth Elliot explains it won't be known who will lose their jobs until that's complete.

"Ultimately what's in the package is really the confirmed structure and a few other personal bits and pieces there. They haven't actually been physically told whether they were proposed to be made redundant or anything at this stage. The reflecting criteria will carry on this week," he said.

"We're certainly on call and keeping our phones on...for anybody that might want to talk to us or move forward or any major concerns come out of those packages that they obviously want to talk to the company about."

Removing the West Coast's reliance on the mineral industry is a challenge community leaders are working hard on.

It comes on the back of 113 jobs to go at Solid Energy's Stockton Mine, along with six at its Spring Creek Mine.

Buller District Mayor Garry Howard says they know things have had to change for some time.

"It just actually puts a bit more vigour and reality into those discussions. I think there are some good plans being put in place without being able to absolutely go out there and say 'well here goes some brand new jobs as of next week'."

Howard is confident the region will evolve on the back of more mining job loses after many jobs have been lost in the region.

"OceanaGold 200, Solid Energy 113, Holcim come into the picture. It's been an avalanche of bad news but I still remain very, very confident about the district overall. It's just going to take a while to get through it."
