Online security firm Symantec says we are entering a new era of cybercrime.

Connected and self driving cars being hacked and held for ransom, drones being hijacked, and cloud-based storage and services attacked are just some of the threats identified.

Spokesman Mark Shaw says there's also evidence of rouge nation states financing themselves by stealing money online.

He said traditionally their motive has been espionage or disruption of some sort.

"This year, we've got very strong indications that certain states were linked to the attacks on banking institutions and [the] subsequent stealing of, in once case in Bangkok, upwards of $81 million," he said.

Recently attackers hacked a Tesla car computer system and took control of the car, and Shaw said that could only be the beginning.

"We at Symantec feel that will extend to actually malicious hacking, and potentially holding those cars to ransom, or even fleets of cars to ransom, and then only allowing those cars to be unlocked once the fine is paid," he said.
